FAQ — Car Keys Richmond | Automotive Locksmith Questions Answered

Question 1

Can you make a key if I have no key at all?

Accepted Answer

Yes. That's a big part of what we do. Using your vehicle's VIN and onboard programming equipment, we can originate a brand-new key even when the original is long gone.

Question 2

How long does it take?

Accepted Answer

Most standard keys and fobs are cut and programmed in well under an hour at your location. Complex European vehicles can take longer — we'll tell you before we start.

Question 3

Do I need to be present when you work on my car?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we require the registered owner or an authorized person to be present with valid ID. This protects you and ensures we're working on the right vehicle.

Question 4

Can you program a key fob I bought online?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes — it depends on the vehicle and the fob. Many aftermarket fobs are not compatible with factory programming protocols. Call us first and we'll tell you whether it'll work before you waste money on a part that won't.

Question 5

What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Accepted Answer

Your vehicle's VIN (on the dashboard or door jamb), a valid government-issued photo ID, and proof of ownership such as a registration or title. We'll confirm what's needed when you book.

Question 6

Is this really cheaper than the dealership?

Accepted Answer

Usually, yes — and the bigger difference is convenience: no tow, no waiting room, no service counter. You get an up-front price range before we begin.

Question 7

Do you charge a trip fee or diagnostic fee?

Accepted Answer

We charge a service call fee that is applied toward the total cost of the job. There are no hidden diagnostic charges — the price we quote is the price you pay.

Question 8

What payment methods do you accept?

Accepted Answer

We accept cash, all major credit and debit cards, and mobile payments including Apple Pay and Google Pay. Payment is due at time of service.

Question 9

Can I get a quote before you come out?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Give us your year, make, model, and what you need and we'll give you a price range over the phone. Final price is confirmed on-site once we've assessed the vehicle.

Question 10

Do you work on European cars?

Accepted Answer

European cars are our specialty — it's most of what we do. Audi, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover, Volvo, and more. It's why Richmond drivers call us the go-to shop for European keys and ignitions.

Question 11

My BMW says 'key not recognized' — can you fix that?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Key recognition errors on BMW, Mini, and other European brands are usually a programming or transponder issue. We carry the equipment to re-pair or replace the key on-site.

Question 12

Can you replace a Mercedes smart key?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We replace and program Mercedes-Benz smart keys and proximity fobs for most models. These are among the more complex jobs we do, but they're well within our capability.

Question 13

Where do you serve?

Accepted Answer

We cover the greater Richmond metro: Richmond city, Short Pump, Midlothian, Chesterfield, Henrico, Glen Allen, and surrounding areas. Not sure if you're in range? Call us — we'll let you know.

Question 14

Are you available on weekends?

Accepted Answer

We handle emergency calls on Saturdays and Sundays. Routine key-cutting appointments are Monday through Friday. Call (804) 350-0811 and we'll get you sorted.

Question 15

Is your work guaranteed?

Accepted Answer

We stand behind every key and repair. If something goes wrong with our work, we make it right.
